          Alto da Memória is also a place of great historical significance, for it was here that the first fortification of ancient Angra was erected, the so-called Castelo dos Moinhos, around 1474. Currently, at this location is the Obelisk of Alto da Memória, a monument commemorating the visit of King Pedro IV to Terceira Island during the Portuguese Civil War (1828-1834).
